Struggling with Inattention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity?

ADHD is a real diagnosis and not one to simply brush off as laziness or lack of focus.

About 5-8% of the global population has ADHD, meaning it’s a lot more common than you may think.

If you have this neurodevelopmental disorder, you may experience:

  • More accidents
  • Living in crisis mode
  • Struggles with addiction
  • Trouble regulating your attention
  • Divorce or relationship challenges

FAQs About ADHD Therapy in Ontario

1. Who is Polina Fedotenko?

Polina Fedotenko is a registered psychotherapist in Ontario, Canada. She specializes in relationships of all types, including the one you have with yourself. Working with Polina can help improve relationships that suffer from the effects of one or both people’s ADHD. Polina speaks English, Russian, and Hebrew. 2. Why does ADHD happen?

The exact cause of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is unknown, but it's likely a combination of factors. Genetics is one factor. ADHD tends to run in families, and research suggests that genes inherited from parents are a significant factor. However, the way ADHD is inherited is likely complex and not related to a single genetic fault.

Another factor is brain function and structure. Studies show that children with ADHD have lower levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that carries signals between nerves and is linked to attention, learning, mood, sleep, and movement. Brain metabolism is also lower in the parts of the brain that control social judgment, attention, and movement.

Yet another factor is environmental factors. These may include exposure to environmental toxins, such as lead, maternal drug or alcohol use, smoking during pregnancy, premature birth, and adverse social and family environments.

3. What type of therapy is best for ADHD?

In my practice, I’ve found that traditional talk therapy is effective for processing the emotional toll of living with ADHD. Once you’re ready, we can also engage in ADHD coaching where I’ll help you choose and try strategies for managing your life and your ADHD symptoms. If needed, we can use CBT and ACT, two popular therapies that deal with thoughts and feelings. I’ve seen many clients get better while working with me, and am confident that I can help you too. Fill out the contact form above to get started.

4. Can ADHD get worse if untreated?

Yes, symptoms of ADHD can worsen if left untreated. ADHD can make it harder to focus, remember details, and control impulses. When not managed properly, these issues can lead to irritability, low self-esteem, and frustration. Untreated ADHD can also lead to problems in many areas of life, including mental health, relationships, and substance use. The best course of action would be to reach out for help to a competent ADHD Therapist near you. If you’re in Ontario, Canada, I’d love to support you. I also offer online ADHD therapy throughout Canada.

5. What does ADHD look like in adults?

ADHD in adults can look like inattentiveness, hyperactivity, disorganization, impulsivity, and difficulty coping with stress. It can look like not being able to focus at work until all coworkers have left, or avoiding small tasks like paying the water bill. If you’re concerned that some of your symptoms may be due to ADHD, I can help make that diagnosis for you, as well as develop an effective ADHD treatment plan. Together, we can get through this. Contact me using the form above and let’s get you the support you deserve.

6. What is the best intervention for adult ADHD?

A combination of treatments is often the most effective intervention for adults with ADHD, including medication, education, skills training, and psychotherapy. These treatments can help manage many symptoms of ADHD, but they don't cure it. However, they can help make it much more manageable, so you can live a fulfilling day-to-day life.
